Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya

It is basically a temple complex dedicated to Buddhist guardian deity and Hindu war god. They are known as Kataragamadeviyo and Kathirkamam respectively. It is one of the few religious sites in Sri Lanka which is visited by Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims. In the past years, it was a jungle site which was difficult to access but now it is possible to travel there by an all-weather road. The deity is handled by Buddhists, the shrines by Hindus and the mosque by Muslims. It is a unique destination to visit and learn about the historic importance. It is a spiritual and wonderful place to travel to see a mix of beliefs and cultures for travellers inclined towards spirituality and local culture.

Kiri Vehera

Kiri Vehera is an ancient stupa situated in Kataragama, Sri Lanka. This stupa probably dates back to the 6th century BC and is believed to have been built by King Mahasena, a regional ruler of Kataragama area. One of the most popular Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the country, Kiri Vehera is among the Solosmasthana, the 16 most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites of ancient Sri Lanka. This stupa which is 95 ft. in height with a circumference of 280 ft. is located 800 m North to the famous Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya.

Sella Kataragama

Out of the many sacred religious places in Sri Lanka which augur hundreds of thousands of visitors for their arrival to the island nation, Sella Kataragama Temple has its share of contribution too. Built on the Menik Ganga banks, this temple in the tiny city appeals all devotees from worldwide locations.  Besides its religious value, monuments and nature’s bounties like Valli’s Cave in Sella Kataragama, Ganesh shrine, various Kovils and other Hindu mythological abodes et al make it a sacred temple for the believers of Hinduism.

Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya

Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara is one of the most famous places to visit in Kataragama area. Followers of Buddhism religion can’t ignore a visit to the ancient Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara temple in Tissamaharama nearby Kataragama. Being one of the four ancient Buddhist monasteries in Sri Lanka, it is always rushed by devotees. Thus, its importance is best judged by this fact that Lord Buddha himself blessed Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara site during his 3rd visit to Sri Lanka. Since the 3rd century itself, this monastery remained a most popular Buddhist enlightenment centre.

Sithulpawwa Rock Temple

The sacred place of eminence, Sithulpawwa Rock Temple is a big landmark in Sri Lanka’s Tissamaharama near Kataragama. This ancient Buddhist monastery is always filled with devotees and is counted among one of the best places to visit in Kataragama, Sri Lanka. Its presence since the 2nd century has turned South-eastern Sri Lanka’s Hambantota District a popular site for religious exploration. Location of this temple at a distance of mere 18 kilometres from Katharagama pilgrimage centre makes it easily accessible. It today remains one of the popular sites to visit to know several notable things about Buddhism.

Kirinda Rajamaha Viharaya

Kirinda Rajamaha Viharaya can be reach via Tissa- Kirinda road. This temple is located on a summit of a rocky mountain, just next to the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Due to its location, this temple gives a magnificent view of sand dunes beach, the Indian ocean, Kirinda fishing harbour and the rest of the surrounding.You need to climb up to reach the temple premises. We can use either recently paved stairways or their steps caved on the rock bed, which was used in the old days.

Lunugamvehera National Park

Tanamalwila based Lunugamvehera National Park is an ultimate place to visit near Kataragama in Sri Lanka. This park is easily accessible to all major places of Sri Lanka by roadways. Tourists flock here almost every day. Established in 1995, this park cum sanctuary is home to many wildlife species. Take for example its elephant corridor, rest habitats and of course the dense evergreen forestry of Weera, Pallu, Teak, Eucalyptus, Kon which makes it a great location to explore. Different varieties of wildlife animals, as well as birds, are witnessed here.

Yala Safari
