Koneswaram Temple
The medieval Hindu temple of Koneswaram Temple, dedicated to Shiva, sits on a rocky cape. Although destroyed and rebuilt throughout its history, this 17th-century structure still stands as an example of classical Dravidian architecture. Numerous hymns and pieces of literature mention the temple for both its traditions and its large quantities of gold, pearls, jewels, and silk. Today, you can observe artefacts saved from the ruins that now feature in the current temple, which was rebuilt in 1963. Be sure to admire the sights, including a sweeping view of the sea. If you arrive early, you can catch a fantastic view of the sunrise.
Fort Frederick
The walls of Fort Frederick protect two temples and offer excellent views of the coastline. Initially constructed by the Portuguese, and later rebuilt by the Dutch, the fort offers sights of miscellaneous artillery, a Gokana temple, and a rebuilt Koneswaram temple, as well as some spotted deer roaming the military camp. On your way from Gokana temple to Kneswaram temple, admire the Georgian-style mansion of Wellesley Lodge, which dates back to the 1700s. Finally, climb up Swami Rock for some great views.
Nilaveli Beach
North of Trincomalee, are these two pristine palm-fringed beaches perfect for a lazy, rejuvenating day by the sea. Uppuveli has powdery white sand, clear emerald waters and a lovely beach vibe with restaurants offering delicious Sri Lankan cuisine. This laidback paradise is perfect for swimming, whale watching, volley-ball or simply relaxing by the sea. Nilaveli beach is further north, bigger, calmer and totally unspoilt by the onslaught of tourism. Pigeon Island
Pigeon Island National Park features white sands, coral reefs, and plenty of rocky outcroppings. Pay a visit to the protected area, one of only two marine parks in the country, and explore its myriad selection of vibrant ecosystems. Bring your snorkeling or diving gear for a chance to observe some of the nation’s finest coral reefs, bursting with underwater life. Alternatively, wander the shoreline or kick back on the sand and enjoy the view of the Indian Ocean stretching out as far as the eye can see.
Marble Beach
Unwind amid the beautiful scenery of turquoise water, powdery white sand, and lush greenery at Marble Beach. Don’t miss the chance to see the sun setting over the endless horizon in beautiful hues of red, pink, and orange. Try snorkelling and discover the vibrant underwater world, play beach volleyball, or just relax under the lovely wooden sunshades. If you’re feeling peckish, grab a bite to eat at the nearby beach resort. Enjoy the tranquillity of your surroundings, as the beach rarely gets crowded.
Trincomalee War Cemetery
A peaceful, well-kept oasis of silence on the road between Upaveli and Nilaveli, Trincomalee War Cemetery preserves memories of British soldiers and auxiliary staff who perished during World War II. This serene meticulously maintained location has graves of Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists alike, all of whom died during the last days of the war. An excellent gardener with a family tradition, the caretaker here has a wealth of information and ensures every grave has a different flowering shrub. As you stroll the grounds, keep an eye out for occasional wildlife such as lizards and monkeys.
Sri Lanka Navy Museum
The Maritime and Naval History Museum is a maritime museum located at Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. It has been established near to Fort Fredrick where the Dutch first landed to the island in the 16th century. The the museum was declared open on 3 February 2013 by then Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksa coincide with the country’s 65th Independence Day celebrations. The museum is used to display the country’s maritime history, marine biodiversity and information of the history of the local Naval affairs.
Kanniya Hot Springs
The Kanniya Hot Springs is a site with hot wells located in Trincomalee. There are seven wells in a square shape. Wells are only 3–4 feet deep and you can clearly see the bottom. The temperature is considerably high but varies slightly from one spring to another. Wells run out of the water, when 10-15 buckets of water are taken out. If you want to experience something different, then definitely make a trip to the Kanniya hot Springs.
Seruwila Mangala Raja Maha Vihara
Counted amongst the holiest Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka, this temple is one of the important places to visit in Trincomalee for the spiritually inclined travellers. The 2nd century stupa was originally built by King Kavantissa and holds the sacred frontal bone of Lord Buddha. Thousand of devotees visit this sacred Buddhist Vihara every year to pay homage and seek blessings of the enlightened one. Also visit the new complex with a huge statue of Buddha; remember to be modestly dressed and remove your footwear.
Whale and Dolphin Watching Tour
Trincomalee is rapidly emerging as another internationally important whale-watching destination. Blue whale ( Balaenoptera musculus) in particular (plus smaller numbers of Great Sperm Whale) can regularly be seen around six to eight nautical miles east of Trincomalee (about 30min by boat), Dolphins (mainly long-snouted Spinner Dolphin ) are also regularly seen.
